About Me
My name is Caroline and I was born in 1978. I have been rescuing rabbits since 1996 when I left school with 9 GCSE’s. I run the rescue by myself, with only a hand full of volunteers who come and go. I also fit in a paid job where I work as a community care worker for the elderly. I rent a room in a bungalow with two friends which is just a walk away from my rescue facilities. The rescue is based on a 1/3rd of an acre which was bought with £5,000 kindly donated by a benefactor. Without their generosity, I would have been unable to start and maintain the rescue facilities that we have today.
I rely solely on donations made by people adopting rabbits and any donations that they are able to give. The time that I used to have to raise funds has been eaten up by the necessity to work for a living and to actually look after the rabbits I rescue. Each rabbit that comes to me is neutered, wormed and vaccinated against myxomatosis and VHD. This costs @ £60 for each rabbit that is rescued. Then there is the cost of feeding and looking after the rabbit until a suitable home can be found.
I have spaces for 40 rabbits and there is always a waiting list of people who want to give up their rabbits. The most common reason for people giving up their rabbits is when children grow bored of them and parents do not assume the responsibility for the life of the rabbit. People buy rabbits as pets and play things for their children not realising the amount of time and effort it takes to look after them on a daily basis.
Pet shops still sell rabbits as simple minded animals that ‘don’t need any looking after’ just a hutch and some food… When the reality sinks in, the rabbits usually pay the price as many people do not seem to value the life of the animal and they look for the easiest way to ‘get rid of them’.
It is my goal to look after rabbits who have been rescued to the best of my ability and to ‘Rehome’ them where ever I can into the homes of people who have expressed a genuine interest in rabbits, their welfare and the work I do, and after a consultation can give a safe new home to any suitable pair of rabbits in my care.
I do hope you will take the time to book an appointment to come and see the rabbits, most people say that they have benefited from a visit, learning (in some cases) that rabbits were not for them. In most cases people have gone home and made sure that they do have the right facilities, space and support to look after their chosen rabbits for the rest of their lives.
I hope to see you soon.
Best wishes,
Caroline
