Kerry's set up
I have a pair of house rabbits called Stomper and Zeba that live in my living room which is 19ft x 10 ft.
I do not lock them into any cage/ hutch at any time, but they do have to share their space with me in the evening etc as I watch TV.
I keep my bunnies in my living room as free range rabbits.
This meant lots of bunny proofing my living room but is very rewarding and my rabbits still get a rich and fulfilling life. I have used bendy metal shower hoses over any exposed cables, and have mounted my TV on the wall.
I'm always changing/ improving my bunny set-up :-)
I try to give my rabbits as many "tunnels" as possible around my room so they have bolt holes and it is more like a warren type set up.
I give them lots of cardboard boxes to chew on/ hide in. This helps with their enrichment.
I have the base to an indoor bunny cage which I use as my large litter tray, I have used some of the metal C&C grids on three sides so that I can attach various hay racks to at least three sides, as bunnies like to poop as they eat. I use back-to-nature for my litter tray on one side and straw on the other side, Zeba loves digging in the litter tray so it usually ends up well mixed.
I have the largest size dog crate (48") in the corner of my room which serves as a burrow as I have filled it with cardboard boxes and tunnels to create a warren like place for my rabbits. I have removed the door, and never lock them in the crate as it is not big enough for them to be able to express normal rabbit behaviour etc.
As long as you give your bunnies plenty of things to do they should not be too destructive. I give mine lots of water hyacinth/ seagrass/ cardboards houses/ apple tree branches which gives them plenty of things to chew on. Rabbits in the wild would spend most of the day eating/ chewing on things therefore this is an important part of enrichment.
Zeba loves to shreds newspapers if I leave them in one of the nest boxes with some straw on top.
I have found that it's cheaper overall to buy bunny supplies in bulk so I buy 15kg bags of readigrass and 30 litre bags of back-to-nature (which I have found to be the best litter for my litter tray). I buy similar sized bags of straw and have some of the 'nest boxes' (A pet carrier, and the PetsAtHome house) filled with straw for the rabbits to enjoy.
I get my back-to-nature from http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=445&pf_id=55054 and there is free delivery on orders over £39.00. When it's not in short supply I also get my readigrass from there too.
I often get supplies from www.zooplus.co.uk as well as they can have some brilliant prices. By getting an account I even got a £5.00 voucher to spend when it was my birthday.
I give mine a mixture of timothy hay, readigrass and other various hays to provide plenty of variety.
I use berry house in hitchin/ shefford for all my vet needs. I think they charge £8 to cut their nails. I think my vaccination cost £30 or £35 per rabbit but I don't exactly remember.
I have uploaded a few videos of my set-up on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/KerryGaultRataj/videos?view=0&flow=grid
Oh and here is the link for the boxes in the last photo which are on offer at PetPlanet for only £15 at the moment.http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=1395&pf_id=60686 They make a great edible warren if turned on the sides and then with a piece of cardboard on top and some carpet on top of that.
I have carpet in my living room which means my rabbits don't slide around on any shiny floors. I have put carpet runners around the edge of the room behind the sofa etc as one of my bunnies enjoys digging and destroying my carpet in places I can't see around the edge of my room. I got my latest carpet runners from Dun Elm for £3.20 or so each.
I hope this inspires you, and if you wish to ask me any questions on my set-up etc please feel free to message me on facebook.
